Why Do FG Falcon Door Pulls Crack? Repair or Replace Explained

A cracked door pull is one of the most common interior faults on an FG or FG-X Falcon. Here is why it happens, whether a glue repair is worth doing, and how to replace just the cup without touching the rest of the door card.

FG Falcon door pulls crack because the pull cup is a plastic part that takes the load of shutting the door every single time, and on a car that is now 10 to 18 years old that plastic has been through a lot of heat and a lot of hands. The good news is the cup is its own piece. You can replace just the cracked cup on an FG or FG-X without replacing the door card, and one cup design fits all four doors.

It is one of the most common interior faults on the FG, so here is the full picture: what causes it, whether a glue repair is worth your time, and what a replacement actually involves.

Why FG Falcon door pulls crack in the first place

Think about how you use the cup. You grab it and pull the door shut, often with a bit of a swing, and every bit of that force goes through the same small area of plastic. Do that a few times a day for a decade and a half and you have put a lot of cycles through one spot.

Age and heat do the rest. The FG ran from 2008 to 2014 and the FG-X from 2014 to 2016, so even the newest car is about ten years old. A Falcon parked in an Australian summer bakes the cabin, and old interior plastic gets more brittle as it goes. That is why the cracks tend to show up where the load is highest, and why they tend to spread once they start. The factory cup is a known weak point on the FG platform for exactly this reason.

Can you glue a cracked FG door pull?

You can, and for a hairline crack it will hide the problem for a while. My honest view is that it rarely lasts on this part. The cup is a grab point, so a glued crack is taking the same load that broke it in the first place, just through a joint that is weaker than the original plastic. That is why glue repairs on a grab point tend to let go again, or crack right next to the repair.

If the cup is only cracked cosmetically and you do not use that door much, a repair is a reasonable stopgap. If it is the driver's door, or the crack is already opening up when you pull on it, replacing the cup is the fix that actually holds.

Do you have to replace the whole door card?

No. This is the part most owners do not realise. The pull cup is a separate piece that mounts to the door card on its own fixing points, so you only replace the cup. The door card, the trim around it and the rest of the door stay exactly as they are.

On the FG the fixing sits under the rubber insert in the base of the cup. Lift the insert out, undo the fixing, and the cup comes away from the door card. The replacement goes in on the same mounting points. No drilling, no cutting and no changes to the door card, and it is a job you can do in the driveway with basic hand tools.

Are all four FG door pull cups the same?

Yes, and it is the most useful thing to know before you order. All four cups on the FG and FG-X share the same geometry. The front right cup is the same part as the rear left, and so on around the car. There is no left or right version and no front or rear version.

That matters for two reasons. If only one of yours is cracked, you only need one cup, and it does not matter which door it is. And if you want the whole cabin to match, a set of four covers every door with no chance of ordering the wrong side. The same cup suits both the FG and the FG-X. If you want to double check anything else against your build, here is how to match a carbon part to your exact FG or FG-X.

Factory plastic, second-hand or carbon fibre?

There are three ways to go, and each has a catch.

  • A factory replacement cup. Same design, same material, same weak point. It fixes today's crack but it is the same plastic that failed the first time.
  • A second-hand cup from a wrecker. Cheap, but it is the same age as the one you are pulling out, and it has already lived through the same summers. You are buying someone else's next crack.
  • A carbon fibre replacement cup. A different material rather than a fresh copy of the old one.

That last one is why we developed carbon fibre door pull cups for the FG and FG-X. They are genuine prepreg carbon under a UV stable gloss clear coat, 3D scanned and engineered off the factory cup so the mounting points and dimensions match the original and the edges sit flush. They are a full replacement, not an overlay stuck over the cracked plastic. You take the factory cup out and the carbon one goes in its place. They come in gloss twill and gloss forged, as a single, a pair or a set of four. The product page shows current stock, and the notify list there is the way to hear first when a run is ready.

Will sun through the side glass fade a carbon door pull?

The door cup sits right below the side window, so it cops direct sun whenever the car is parked facing the wrong way. On real carbon the fibre itself does not yellow, the clear coat on top is what takes the UV, which is why a UV stable clear matters on a part like this. If you want the detail on it, I have written up what sun through the side glass does to a clear coat. A quick wipe with a pH neutral interior cleaner is all the cup needs day to day. Skip anything with solvents.

Where the door pulls fit in an FG interior

If you are already sorting a cracked cup, it is a good time to think about the rest of the cabin. The door pulls and the shifter surround are the two places your hands land most in an FG, and they are also the two pieces that show wear first. If you are ready to look at parts, the full range of FG Falcon carbon fibre interior parts is listed with the exact builds each one suits. Driving something other than a Falcon? FAQ

Why do FG Falcon door pulls crack?

The cup takes the full load of pulling the door shut, always through the same small area, and the plastic is now 10 to 18 years old and has been heat cycled through a lot of summers. Old interior plastic gets brittle, so cracks start where the load is highest and spread from there.

Can I replace just the door pull cup, not the door card?

Yes. The cup is a separate piece on its own fixing points. On the FG the fixing sits under the rubber insert in the base of the cup, so you lift the insert out, undo the fixing and swap the cup. The door card stays on the car and nothing needs cutting or drilling.

Are the front and rear door pull cups the same on an FG?

Yes. All four cups on the FG and FG-X share the same shape, so the front right is the same part as the rear left. One cup replaces a cracked one on any door, and a set of four covers the whole car.

Do FG door pull cups fit the FG-X?

Yes. The door pull cup is the same across the FG (2008 to 2014) and the FG-X (2014 to 2016), so the same replacement suits both.

Is a glued repair on a cracked door pull worth it?

As a short term cosmetic fix on a door you rarely use, it can be. On the driver's door, or on a crack that opens up when you pull on it, a glue joint is carrying the same load that broke the part, so it usually fails again. Replacing the cup is the fix that holds.

A cracked door pull is one of those small things that makes a good FG feel tired every time you get in. It is a simple swap, it does not touch the rest of the door, and done once with the right material it should be the last time you think about it.
