Best Carbon Fibre Upgrades for the VW Golf MK7 GTI and Golf R

The VW Golf MK7 GTI and Golf R are already well-sorted cars, so the best upgrades are ones that complement what's already there rather than trying to change the character of the car. At RB Innovations we make two genuine carbon fibre parts for the MK7 range, and this post covers what they are, what they cost, and how to think about the order you add them.

Best Carbon Fibre Upgrades for the VW Golf MK7 GTI and Golf R

The Golf MK7 is one of those cars that doesn't need much done to it. Whether you're running a GTI or the all-wheel-drive Golf R, Volkswagen already gave you a tight, well-engineered platform. Most MK7 owners I talk to aren't chasing a wild transformation, they just want a few well-chosen parts that sharpen up the look without making the car feel like it's trying too hard.

Carbon fibre fits that brief really well. It's a material that adds visual weight and detail in the right places, but it reads as intentional rather than shouty, especially on a car like the Golf where the body lines are already quite refined. The key, as always, is buying genuine carbon fibre and not the plastic-and-vinyl imitations that make up a lot of what you'll find at the cheaper end of the market.

At RB Innovations we make two carbon fibre parts for the MK7 range. Here's what they are, what they cost, and how I'd think about adding them.

Carbon Fibre Mirror Covers

The mirror covers are the first thing I'd point any MK7 owner toward. The factory housings are plain black plastic, and because the mirrors sit right at eye level on the car, they're one of the first things people notice. Swapping them for genuine carbon fibre makes an immediate difference to how the car presents from the outside.

Our Golf MK7 carbon fibre mirror covers are made from genuine 2x2 twill weave carbon fibre, vacuum bagged and heat cured. The finish is a UV-resistant gloss clear coat. That last part matters more than it might seem. A lot of carbon fibre parts, especially cheaper imports, are finished with a basic lacquer that starts to yellow and cloud within a year or two of sun exposure. The UV-resistant coat we use is designed for Australian conditions, which are harder on exterior parts than most.

Fitment covers the full Golf MK7 GTI and Golf R range from 2013 through to 2021, so regardless of which variant or year you're on, these will fit. Installation takes around 15 to 20 minutes. The factory cover unclips from the mirror housing and the carbon unit snaps into place. No drilling, no modifications, no adhesive required.

Currently on sale at $170, down from $190. For most people, this is the right starting point for carbon fibre upgrades on the MK7.

Carbon Fibre Engine Cover

The engine cover is a more targeted upgrade. It won't change how your car looks from the outside at all, which means it's really for people who care about the engine bay presentation, track day regulars who have the bonnet up regularly, or anyone who's already sorted the exterior and wants to take things a bit further.

The Golf's 2.0T engine bay is reasonably tidy from the factory, but the plastic engine cover is exactly what it sounds like. Replacing it with genuine carbon fibre gives you a noticeably different look whenever the bonnet is up. It's one of those details that car people notice immediately and non-car people walk right past, which honestly makes it one of my favourite kinds of upgrade.

Same construction as everything else in our range: genuine woven 2x2 twill carbon fibre, vacuum bagged, heat cured, finished with UV-resistant gloss clear coat. It's a direct replacement for the factory cover. You pull the OEM unit off its mounts, set the carbon cover in place, and you're done. No cutting or modification to the car.

Currently on sale at $350, down from $400. Fits the Golf MK7 GTI and Golf R from 2013 to 2021.

Which Should You Upgrade First?

If budget is a consideration, start with the mirror covers. They're the more affordable of the two, they have more visual impact from the outside, and they'll give you a clear sense of how genuine carbon fibre looks and wears on your specific colour. Darker colours like Deep Black and Reflex Silver tend to contrast really nicely with a gloss twill weave. Lighter colours like Oryx White can look striking too, though it's a bolder combination.

The engine cover makes sense as a second step for anyone who wants to take the build further or who spends time at shows or track days where the engine bay gets attention. If budget isn't a limiting factor and you want both, there's no reason not to do them together. They're complementary rather than competing upgrades.

Both parts are available through our genuine carbon fibre parts range, and you can also browse everything we make for the Golf and other vehicles on our shop by make and model page.

A Note on What You're Buying

I deal with this question every week. Someone finds a set of "carbon fibre" mirror covers online for $40 and asks me why ours are more expensive. The short answer is that they're not the same product. Most of what gets sold at that price point is ABS plastic with a carbon fibre print over it, which is not genuine carbon fibre.

Every part we make at RB Innovations is genuine woven carbon fibre, vacuum bagged and heat cured in a proper mould. That process is more involved, more expensive to do right, and it produces a part that is lighter, stronger, and better finished than the alternatives. If you want to understand what separates real carbon fibre from the imitations and what questions to ask before you buy, I'd recommend reading our post on how to spot fake carbon fibre before you buy. It covers the specific things to look for and will make you a better informed buyer regardless of where you're shopping.
